About Groningen
Groningen: a place where you can be surrounded by both history and innovation at the same time. Feel the energy of the city or step into the silence of the countryside.
A mix of old and new
With a beautiful combination of historical and modern architecture, Groningen is a compact city with all the amenities of a large metropolis, yet it still retains its medieval small town charm.
A city of pioneers and innovators
Two world renowned universities, 4 Nobel Prize laureates and the second leading startup and scale-up city of the Netherlands. With half of its population under 35 and 44% university level educated, Groningen is one of the youngest and brightest cities of the Netherlands.
Vibrant city, stunning countryside
Groningen is internationally renowned for its vibrant nightlife, with lots and lots of bars, clubs and live music venues. And if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, the tranquil countryside is just outside the city. A short drive north, the Wadden Sea was designated a Unesco World Heritage site since 2009 as the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats.
