Originally the cemetery was called the Nieuwe Sint-Walburgkerkhof. The church is located on the northernmost hill of the Hondsrug; the Nordic or Tie (Thye).
At the beginning of the seventeenth century it was decided to expand the city of Groningen to the north. This new explanation also included a new church, the first Protestant church in Groningen. In 1660 the construction of the New Church started. Nieuwe Kerk was built in Renaissance style with a plan in the shape of a Greek cross, topped with a small crossing tower. Triangular houses have been built in the armpits. There was already a cemetery in the new cemetery. The plague dead used to be buried here (then still outside the city). The cemetery has now been replaced by a lawn with old trees where students and townspeople enjoy the sun, especially in the summer months.
In addition to the weekly Sunday worship services, the Nieuwe Kerk is increasingly being used as a multifunctional and cultural center in the city center of Groningen. Many orchestras and choirs give concerts there, many couples prefer the church as a wedding location and many students have visited the Nieuwe Kerk once during their student days. For a graduation ceremony, for a lecture or in church to become a member of one of Groningen's many student associations. Bands, singer-songwriters and theater and dance companies are also increasingly finding their way to the Nieuwe Kerk. Since the 2018 edition, the Nieuwe Kerk has been an annual venue within the Eurosonic/Noorderslag programme.
In the west corner of the church is the grand Timpe Organ, built in 1831 by J.W. Timpe.
It has 42 registers, divided into major, back positive, upper, and pedal. The organ is still used during Sunday worship services, at weddings and funerals, and also at concerts. The organ is also used for organ lessons and can also be played by experienced amateurs for a fee.
