Groningen grain where locomotives used to be
When the grain still filled the horizon of the east of Groningen, that same horizon was regularly crossed by a steam locomotive. Locomotives that were not running were parked in a depot. In Bad Nieuweschans, no less than twelve could stand next to each other. Nowadays De Graanrepublic fills the impressive halls: Groningen grain today.

Trains in a row
Eight and later even twelve steam locomotives could be parked in the old locomotive shed. Each locomotive had its own section (segment) in the depot. You can tell by the roof: twelve gable roofs in a row. Until 1935, the locomotives drove out of their segment from this crescent to a huge turntable at the front of the shed. The rails then led them wherever possible. So now no more trains, but grain. Crazy? Not at all. At the end of the last century, the warehouse was also used as a grain storage facility by the Northern Grain Trade.

Golden yellow grain
The old depot now houses De Graanrepublic cooperative. Farmers and craft businesses work together under this banner to allow as many people as possible to taste this wonderful grain from Groningen. Come drink beer, eat bread, buy pasta and watch the mill crush oats into oatmeal. The story of Groningen as a granary comes to life again between the brick and cast iron pillars of this great industrial heritage.
